The Wealth and Poverty of Nations by Peter Lyons

This simulation aims to illustrate to students the following economic concepts:

  • Why countries trade.

  • The factors that affect the level and patterns of international trade between countries.

  • The factors that contribute to inequalities between nations.

Students work in groups of 2 to 4 students. Each group represents a country.

The aim of each group is to maximise their country's wealth in dollars by exporting and importing items according to what they produce and consume each round.

  • Can be used with 7-30 participants.

  • Designed to meet objecives for level 3 of the New Zealand Economics syllabus and level 3 of the New Zealand Social Studies curriculum (how and why different systems of exchange exist).

  • Appropriate for the teaching of economics at International schools.

This simulation is a great way of introducting the concepts of international trade, comparative advantage, patterns of trade, determinants of exports/imports and balance of trade.
